| Winds shifting in the debate over education
However foreign or daunting it may seem to you, the era of the glorious teak-bedecked dreadnought has passed. To understand warships, you must be sure that you're clear on this: they are weapons platforms, and projections of power. Admiral Mahan taught us that more than a century ago. We now have the benefit of many other, far more effective, naval weapons platforms. Not all of them are even surface ships, or seagoing vessels at all. A modern navy is not composed of a surface fleet. Today's navies are three-dimensional entities. By thinking only in terms of scho—-excuse me—-battleships, we are missing an entire dimension. Moreover, by assigning our able naval architects to design nothing but battle wagons, we are depriving our nation of its best opportunity to dream up new defenses.

House passes teacher pension merger bill
It's now up to the state Senate to decide whether to offer aid to West Virginia teachers concerned about their retirement benefits. The House of Delegates voted Thursday to pass legislation that would allow educators with 401(k)-style retirement accounts to merge into the state's other teacher pension fund. But the bill would require at least 75 percent of these 19,000 or so account holders to transfer. If enough agree to enter the Teachers Retirement System, they would still face makeup payments to ensure full benefits. The bill would also require $78 million in state money to fund the transfer. That helped prompt eight delegates to vote against it. Critics question why so much taxpayer money should be spent to help less that 20,000 people.
Conster Nation
DUMMERSTON, Vt. -- There's no getting around it: fat tastes good. In fact, fat tastes great. So there's this television commercial, Wendy's, I think, and instead of French fries, our national food, a man orders a baked potato with his breaded and fried whatever-nuggets. Everyone in the restaurant falls over in their chairs. A baked potato instead of fries! He's a hero, this guy. People applaud as he walks away from the counter, and a pretty blonde pantomimes "Call me." But if you look at his plate, the potato is split and jammed like an ice cream sundae with mounds of white fluffy sour cream. And how much do you want to bet there's butter under there, too? Because as I said, fat tastes great, and when there's an abundance of food around, and you can indulge yourself in whatever instant gratification you're able to dream up, fat is going to be high on the list.
