Peanut butter: still a ‘good thing’

Peanut butter is a longtime staple and favorite for children and adults. The good news is peanuts, it turns out, can be really good for us. Peanuts pack a load of nutrition in a small package. They are a good source of protein, with 7 grams in a 1-ounce serving. There are also 2 grams of fiber and almost one quarter of the recommended daily allowance for vitamin E in each ounce, not to mention magnesium, potassium, copper, folic acid and many other vitamins and minerals. A healthy handful Fear of fat keeps many people from making peanuts part of their diet. But many studies are showing that the monounsaturated fat in peanuts is a healthy choice — especially since it comes with so much that is good for you. The newest and latest flat-belly diet insists on nuts. Heart health — Several studies have shown that eating peanuts can help reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering both cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Mothers Given Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation Give Birth To ...

When mothers are given multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMN,) they tend to give birth to children who are bigger and heavier. This is contrast to mothers given just iron and folic acid supplementation (IFA). The effect continues into the first three years of the children's lives, according to an article in the February 8 issue of The Lancet, which follows up the Lancet Series on Maternal and Child Undernutrition.

While it is already known that low birthweight affects child morbidity and survival rates in developing countries, it is not always clear what effect interventions to increase birthweight can have on child health. Dr David Osrin, UCL Centre for International Health and Development, Institute of Child Health, London, UK and colleagues from Mother and Infant Research Activities, Kathmandu, Nepal, has previously investigated this issue through a randomized controlled trial in Nepal comparing 1,200 women given either IFA (a control) or MMN, a supplement with the recommended daily value of 15 vitamins and minerals, during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.

Where do women voters stand

We hoped that the democratic voting block would see through the promises of the Democrats running for Congress to regulate the oil companies, fix the Health system and stop exporting our jobs, but they didnt. Now we have a Congress with a lower approval rating than the president.

Shanti and Andrea both talked about the women that would come over from the Republican Party to support a woman running for president. For every woman that comes over, there will undoubtedly be a man that will defect in the opposite direction in order to vote against a woman.

Perhaps a woman could make a connection with men from both sides and not only pull in women from the Republicans, but maintain the support of the men from her own party: that is unless the woman was Mrs. Bill Clinton.

Chris Mooney Reads from 'Storm World'

It's a partisan examination of how George W. Bush's White House distorted or suppressed information on a number of scientific fronts — from mercury pollution to the teaching of evolution — to appeal to the Republican Party's conservative base.

"I used to be something of a fire-breather and something of a troublemaker," Mooney says. "My last book…was a loud cry of outrage, a loud demand for reform."

But Mooney says Storm World is different. It's "less argumentative," he says, and "more personal." When the author visited New Orleans after Katrina in 2005, house after house "looked as though they had been ransacked by the Creature from the Black Lagoon," he writes. "My mother's house was one of these."

This discussion of Storm World took place in July 2007 at the Politics and Prose bookstore in Washington, D.C.

ORU alumni support sought

Uncertainty remained Saturday about what effect Richard Roberts' resignation as president will have on Oral Roberts University, but some observers said it was a step toward improvement.

"I think people are going to be waiting and watching: OK, can it survive without a Roberts at the helm?" said Donald R. Vance, professor of biblical languages and literature.

Vance said he thinks alumni need to support ORU as it undergoes this transition, after being led for 42 years by a Roberts. ORU professors are committed to the school's evangelical Christian mission, but that might not be obvious without a TV minister as president, he said. Christian colleges across the country are led by non-ministers -- "it will just be different for us."

ORU leaders have not addressed what role, if any, Roberts will have at the university.

Nutrition Expert: Poorly Son Won't Eat Meat

My 3-year-old has been poorly on and off with all sorts of bugs for about five months. The health visitor thinks he could be anaemic but he won't eat meat of any kind. I've tried disguising meat in recipes but he always finds it and leaves it. I have tried getting him to eat apricots and figs but he won't eat them. He also won't eat vegetables but he does eat other fruit. Any ideas to boost his iron intake?

Nutrition Expert Emer's Advice
If you think your son is anaemic he may feel tired, be irritable and have a poor appetite at the moment. If the anaemia is left untreated, he may be at risk of infections and it may slow down his development. Therefore, it might be beneficial to consult his GP as he might benefit from iron supplements.

Unfortunately, animal sources of iron e.g.
