Keep Unborn Baby Healthy: Dos and Don'ts

Although there is no way to guarantee that your baby will be born 100 percent healthy, expecting mothers can take certain steps to reduce the risk of some physical and intellectual abnormalities.

The Life and Times of Marie Benoit

His mother made him a delicious chocolate cake but he was not allowed to have even the smallest of pieces. With his father there I wasnt able to give him a few crumbs and instead, he loved Suzys delicious Salmon Mousse. I made loads of coloured sandwiches which is a tradition as my mother used to make them for us, I made them for my children in Mauritius and now I enjoyed making them for Harry. They were filled with love, parsley, cheese, eggs, mayonnaise and more love. He seemed to enjoy the savoury bits and pieces. I also made Peter Dacoutros Mortadella bread, from one of his recipe books. To my utter astonishment I got it right, first time round. I usually have to make a new recipe three or four times and poison a few people before it is edible and resembles the photo. I told Peter, proudly, of my latest achievement and he said that I should also try it with Salmon instead of Mortadella.

Israel looks to cut Gaza links

Egyptian officials said the border would eventually "return to normal," and Egyptian police prevented Gazans from moving deeper into Egypt.Gazans had hoped the temporary border opening would become permanent.Israel has said since the 2005 pull-out that it should not be considered an occupying power in Gaza. But it has maintained control of Gaza's northern and eastern border crossings and its airspace and coastal waters. The blockade Israel has imposed on the Strip since the Hamas takeover became almost complete a week ago after rocket attacks against southern Israel.Yossi Alpher, former director of the Jaffee Centre for Strategic Studies in Tel Aviv, said Mr Vilnai's statement was more than his own personal views. "This reflects the (Israeli] government's wishful thinking" he said. He said severing all Israel's links would depend on Egyptian readiness to leave the border open and "would take a long time even if Egypt was willing to take Gaza off Israel's hands."Egyptian officials angrily dismissed Mr Vilnai's proposal.

Plan: Video game gyms could get kids moving

Health clubs and schools are now turning to these innovative technology-driven activities to get kids moving.

"'Exergames' are video games that promote exercise. 'Interactive fitness games' are technology-driven games that also promote exercise, but don't require a screen," says Lisa Hansen, PhD candidate at the University of South Florida and co-director of their fitness lab.

Put a bunch of these games together in an arcade-like atmosphere and you have an "XRKade," which promote a fun and social experience, she says. Only a handful of these arcades currently exist in the U.S., but many more are expected to open in 2008.

To some, using technology to motivate kids to exercise might seem counterintuituve. But kids love games.

"We have found that they never sit down when playing the various games in our XRKade lab," says Hansen.

Howard the possum stirs up a lot of human feelings

Readers of the ongoing saga of Howard the possum in Gardening Fool columns have responded with several heartfelt stories of their own. Others have written to reiterate that it is we humans who have overrun wildlife's territory, not the other way around, so we should learn to live together peacefully.

To date, no new feedback involving firearms or recipes for possum stew have arrived on my desk. At least one reader has warned that possum attacks on my garden chickens are inevitable. When that happens, he writes, I won't be such a bleeding heart for Howard and his relatives.

As it turns out, however, more than a few of you have a soft spot for the wild things.

WASHINGTON -- A veteran U.S. senator announced Tuesday that he is looking into generous salaries, luxury cars and private jets provided to six televangelists, including three who serve as regents for Oral Roberts University. "I'm following up on complaints from the public and news coverage regarding certain practices at six ministries," said Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. "The allegations involve governing boards that aren't independent and allow generous salaries and housing allowances and amenities such as private jets and Rolls Royces." The Relationship Between Man and Nature: What a Little Bird Told Us

Saving birds means nothing if we don't re-create an environment for them to live in. Birds are not dangerous, like tigers — unless, of course, bird flu becomes a threat — but they are wild, and they live inside an infinitely complex web of complementary dependencies.

The Carolina parakeet became extinct for the usual reasons — hunting by humans, loss of habitat. But also, it seems, for a few unusual reasons, like the spread of honeybees — brought here by European settlers and referred to by Indians as "the white man's flies" — that took over the hollow logs the birds nested in.

Though the Carolina parakeet managed to hang on in land developed for farming, this very adaptability may, in a crowning irony, have proved its undoing since it is speculated that proximity to human habitation exposed the birds to poultry disease, which they could not withstand.
