| I’m Just Sayin’: Are you a social drinker?
We have our share of teetotalers, alcoholics and everything in between that relates to using alcohol here in Southwest Florida. A survey about alcohol usage probably would show that 99 percent of people who drink are merely “social drinkers." One percent would have no opinion or could not remember. While chatting with friends about how we all probably drink more or at least more often than our parents and grandparents did, I wondered what being a “social drinker" means. Most people probably would say a social drinker is anyone who drinks about the same amount he or she does. It's like asking what being “middle aged" means. I think of middle age as about 10 years older than I am, although that definition increasingly strains credulity. Back to drinking — Let's face it.
Immigration Agents to Stop Sedating Deportees
Immigration officials have acknowledged that 56 deportees were given psychotropic drugs during a seven-month period in 2006 and 2007 even though most had no history of mental problems. The American Civil Liberties Union filed a federal lawsuit over the practice. An internal Immigration and Customs Enforcement memo dated Wednesday and obtained by The Associated Press on Friday said effective immediately, agents must get a court order before administering drugs "to facilitate an alien's removal." "There are no exceptions to this policy," said the memo written by John Torres, detention and removal director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. To get a sedation order from court, officials must show deportees have a history of physical resistance to being removed or are a danger to themselves.
Dairy farmers learn power of their checkoff dollars
JAMESTOWN, N.D. - Simply put, milk checkoff dollars are being used to "promote great products made by great people."That's what Char Heer, program manager for the North Dakota division of the Midwest Dairy Association (MDA), told dairy farmers attending the Midwest Dairy Association/Dairy Cow College meeting in Jamestown recently. Those administering the program have a goal to make sure the check-off funds go as far as possible to promote consumer dairy consumption. At the present time there are three main areas of focus in their promotion program:- Use the funds as a catalyst for new products and packaging and help in the development of new products based on new flavors and ingredients;- Promote the nutritional benefits of dairy and how they fit into the dietary guidelines; and- Promote the image of dairy producers and the dairy industry.
Six Dead In N. Illinois Campus Shooting
The gunman was a former graduate student in sociology at NIU, but was not currently enrolled at the 25,000-student campus about 65 miles west of Chicago, according to Peters. The shooting was the fourth at a U.S. school within a week. "At this point, I'm being told it was less than two minutes. This thing started and ended in a matter of seconds," Peters said, adding that police had no apparent motive. Witnesses in the class said "someone dressed in black came out from behind a screen in front of the classroom and opened fire with a shotgun," Peters said. The gunman shot himself on the stage in front of panicked students, reports CBS affiliate WBBM-TV. Desiree Smith, a senior journalism major who was in the science class attacked, said students crawled on each other to get away from the shooter.
