| Weight-loss surgery can be a 'life-saving' option for some patients
Although most people can lose weight the old-fashioned way through disciplined eating and regular exercise, bariatric (the treatment of obesity) surgery is an option for very overweight people who have tried everything else. "You don't just jump into this," says Dr. Frederick Buckley Jr., F.A.C.S., who practices general, vascular and bariatric surgery in Salem. "We're the last stop, and this solution is intended to be forever." Weight-loss surgery is not for the slightly overweight, nor is it a quick fix for people who haven't tried other methods first. To be eligible, patients must be at least 100 pounds overweight, undergo psychological and cardiac screening and commit to a new eating pattern for the rest of their lives. Insurance companies may also require them to undergo six months of physician-monitored weight loss (usually by a primary-care provider) during the year prior to surgery or their own six-month phone-monitored system, which Buckley believes is less effective than proceeding directly to what he considers "life-saving" surgery.

IT Updated: Smart Wireless Checkout the Key to Faster Shopping
Every consumer has stood in a long line to check out at their favorite store and wondered why the store has 20 checkout lanes and only three open. Self-checkout lines have helped alleviate the hassle of long lines to some extent, but the shopping cart still has to be unloaded and your items scanned before paying. Grocery store chain Stop & Shop, which has 389 locations in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and New Jersey, has been running a trial of a new checkout service since October that could make standing in checkout lines a thing of the past. The system, called Modiv Shopper from Modiv Media, is a small device that is issued to shoppers from a kiosk in the store after they swipe their loyalty cards. The gadget sits on the cart and as items are added it automatically tallies the cart contents up.
RBA expected to lift rates
So the decision was taken, that why let the general public and financial markets wait almost another day to hear the result. They may as well announce it as soon as the board meeting's over. "Hence the 2:30pm AEDT announcement time." Tags: economic-trends, finance-markets, business-regulation, federal-government, australia .
Women's Hoops Notes: Bryant coach Burke has come a long way from Toll ...
Not quite a typical Saturday for Mary Burke, women's basketball coach at Bryant University and one of 14 men and women who will be inducted into the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame. "When I got the letter, I couldn't believe it," Burke said. "Then I checked the schedule. Am I home or away? We play a lot of away games in New England, but am I in Albany or Syracuse?" Seeing she would be home, she relaxed, but only a little. Her game starts 30 minutes before the PC-Louisville men's game, and when the other inductees are introduced at halftime, she will still be working. "I won't be there for that, but there's a dinner at night, and I'll be OK for that," she said. Burke has come a long way since her high school days as a basketball and volleyball star at Toll Gate in Warwick.
Bourbon Street 'closing' is a show in itself
We should take a little time to explain our "traditions" to them when they have a puzzled look or make erroneous statements or assumptions. The traditional police "closing" of Bourbon St. is not a show of force, but a reminder that Mardi Gras ends when Ash Wednesday begins. And,finally, I certainly remember when our police force were not so polite in their tactics when attempting the shutdown. .
