19 deaths at VA traced to poor care

The hospital undertook many surgeries that its staffing or lack of proper surgical expertise made it ill-equipped to handle, and hospital administrators were too slow to respond once problems surfaced, said Dr. Michael Kussman, U.S. veterans affairs undersecretary for health.

WORK IN PROGRESS: Hamga's confidence growing Seven-foot freshman from ...

Sweat streaming down his face and exhaustion in his eyes, Beas Hamga took a needed break. This is his year off, technically, but he never has been so busy.

With basketball practice, class and the weight room on his schedule, Hamga is working harder and making more progress than he imagined.

"I can do so many things that I couldn't do when I first got here," the 7-foot freshman from Cameroon said Thursday after UNLV's practice at the Thomas & Mack Center. "I'm glad because I know that I'm really improving."

In mid-October, when Hamga stepped on the floor for his first official workout with the Rebels, he was a different person in body and mind. He's stronger and in better shape now, not to mention much happier.

Swath grazing annual forages can be viable alternative to range

STREETER, N.D. - Swath grazing is one option livestock producers can use to winter beef cows in this region, research at the North Dakota State University Central Grasslands Research Center shows.Kevin Sedivec, NDSU animal scientists, said this type of grazing can be an economical choice for producers as it eliminates some harvesting costs. The costs of swathing, baling, stacking, storing, and feeding baled hay can be reduced by allowing livestock to "swath graze" windrows. Swath grazing is the process of cutting hay, leaving it in windrows, and allowing livestock to graze these windrows in the winter.Another reason producers may want to try swath grazing is that swathed forages keep their nutritional content better than the standing crop, Sedivec said. With a standing crop, nutrition can be lost due to cattle trampling, poor use of the crop, and limited water supplies on annual crop land.

Felony DUI hits (another) roadblock -- a big one...

But parks supporters argued against kissing off the $3 million a year that the fees raise for things like grafitti-scrubbing, maintenance and cleaning restrooms.

One of the few voices against lifting the fee was Sen. Ken Jacobsen, D-Seattle. Thirty seven other states have similar park fees, he said, and Washington already has a budget-minded pass for families: for $50 a year, they park as much as they want at as many state parks as they want.

Four years from now, he predicts, the state will reverse itself.

"I bet you $100 to one I'm going to be right," Jacobsen told the lawmakers who voted to do away with the fee. "You're going to be wrong."

Michael Jackson No Longer In Neverland

Fox News is reporting that Jackson's Neverland Ranch is set be sold at auction on March 19.

Jackson can keep his theme park if he can pay off $24,525,906.61 by that date. If not, a public auction will take place in Santa Barbara, Calif., in front of the county courthouse.

Whoever buys the pile will take possession of the personal property inside, all fixtures and appliances, furniture, and "all merry go round type devices," any rides and games.

Fans may wonder at the look on Jackson's face when his spiritual home is sold off. They may even want to get the look for themseves.

But being a Jackson impersonator, as so many Jackson fans seem to be, and copying his face, is like hitting a moving target.

The advice is to bury your face in your hands, or a sock drawer…

Study Links Daily Fast-Food Consumption, No Exercise to Liver Damage

The findings, published in the journal Gut, are based on 18 slim, healthy people (12 men and six women) who took a "fast food challenge" for four weeks, and a comparison group, matched for age and sex, who ate a normal diet.

The fast good group restricted their levels of physical activity to not more than 5,000 daily steps and ate at least two fast food meals every day.

Participants consumed a hamburger, fries and a soda at most fast food meals.

The aim was to double caloric intake and increase total body weight by between 10 percent and 15 percent to see if these had any impact on their liver health, it was reported.

Blood samples were taken before the challenge began and then at regular intervals throughout the study period, to check on their liver enzyme and fat levels.

The Wet One from Edmonchuk, Canada writes: I think that Grant has the ...

The reversal of the 0.5% increase to the lowest bracket isn't much.

As well, raising the exemption amount doesn't do a whole lot either.

I would have preferred to see every bracket moved upwards by a few thousand bucks.

The GST cut is something, but not the best economic decision. However, the Tories are trying to keep at least some of their promises (unlike say, taxes on Income Trusts).

Ah well. In the game of baseball, I think I'd rate this tax cut a walk or a single. It's no double, triple, in-field homer, home run or grand slam.

I suppose I ought not be surprised. Governments of any stripe think they know how to spend my money better than I do.

Sigh...

Gucci Group: The ice cream man cometh

Jan Zijderveld, who worked for him twice at Unilever and is now chairman of that company's North Africa and Middle East operations, recalls how Polet was determined in the mid-1990s to try out production of liquid margarine. His boss at the time balked at the idea, but Polet went ahead anyway, secretly buying a machine and setting up a pilot line in the back of an existing factory. Liquid margarine has gone on to become a big hit. "Asking for forgiveness," Polet says, "is better than asking for permission." Says Zijderveld: "He hates rules. He believes in keeping it simple."

That same spirit of self-reliance and pushing the limits is taking hold at Gucci Group. Some functions, such as IT, global communications, and human resources, remain coordinated at the slimmed-down group head office in London, but everything else has been kicked down to the brands, which have full responsibility for their profits as well as their products.
